It seems like the formidable starting hands are losing more frequently than they should in betting online with the rise in poker’s popularity, especially online Texas Holdem. Is there a reason for this? More unskilled opponents are calling all of it right down to the river, and that’s why a hand like Ace-King is losing more frequently than it should.
In low-limit Texas Holdem matches it is rather common to see a raise with Ace-King being called by 4 or 5 hands. Suddenly the AK doesn’t appear nearly as strong against 4 or 5 drawing hands.
If a flop like A-3-7 comes down, even someone calling with something like A-7 might present a problem. It appears like the AK would appear pretty strong here, yet you have no way of figuring out that someone flopped two pair.
The bottom line when you play Ace-King, and an Ace or a King hits on the flop, is that you’re going to bet. It is the correct approach. Specifically in Limit Holdem where individuals will draw with anything, that does not mean you will always win.
You have more competitors that are playing marginal hands in Limit Holdem, and there are going to be more negative beats for a hand like Ace-King when that happens. Is there anything it is possible to do with the Ace-King? In that previous situation, how many ways can you play the Ace-King?
Really you might fold Ace-King before the flop but that isn’t a choice. You might check instead of gambling, but that isn’t a great choice either. You want more money in the pot because AK is a great hand. You might check on the flop instead of leading out with a bet, but you offer other competitors a free card.
So how might you have played the Ace-King any better? There genuinely is not a lot you can do if someone flops the two pair. You’re almost certainly just stuck paying them off.
Why does Ace-King fail so frequently? For one, way too many competitors are staying in the hand. There is nothing it is possible to do regarding that. You still need to lead out and bet. Second of all, it almost certainly just appears like AK is losing a good deal.
It makes you want to play more hands that you almost certainly shouldn’t if you continuously get negative beats with AK. It genuinely gets difficult when you continuously see everybody hitting crap hands like A-3, K-5, etc, to defeat your stronger starting hand.
You begin to think that if they can play marginal hands, you can as well. So you begin losing with A-10, A-9, K-10, etc, instead of losing with just AK once in awhile.
In reality, AK almost certainly does not lose an inordinate total of the time, it just appears that way. AK just looks so good that when you lose it places you on tilt which is all you remember.
